In the run-up to the 2022 elections, Deputy President William Ruto has intimated that he will choose Rigathi Gachagua, a long-time ally and Mathira Member of Parliament.

On December 4, while speaking to Nyeri people as part of his tour of the region, Ruto requested that Gachagua accompany him in his quest for national votes.

Even as they work with the rich MP to seek votes across the country, the DP moved ahead and asked citizens to safeguard the legislator’s seat.

Since the DP’s fallout with President Uhuru Kenyatta following the Jubilee government’s reelection in 2017, Gachagua has been a vociferous Ruto supporter in the region.

Gachagua worked as a District Officer (DO) and as a personal assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta during his unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2002.

Former Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua died in February 2017. He is his younger brother.

On multiple cases, legislators’ support for the DP has resulted in him falling into the clutches of law enforcement. As a result, supporters of the DP’s camp claimed that the government was aggravating the legislator because of his support for the DP.

Furthermore, Ruto urged locals to use a six-part voting system that would result in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party securing a majority of the elective seats.

“Will you provide us with a UDA governor, senator, MP, and MCA who is aware of the hustlers and understands the bottom line?” Ruto was the one who initiated the conversation.

This follows Ruto’s requests for parties in the region’s vote-rich region to collapse and join UDA, despite criticism of his tough attitude on political coalitions.
