There were no shocks when Solskjaer was dismissed of his duties following a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Watford, the latest in a long run of humiliating outcomes.
What remained unknown, though, was who the club might look to replace him with.
Steve Bruce has been mentioned as a possible interim manager as the team waits for additional alternatives to open up in the summer.
According to a Marca article, they might not even have to wait that long.
Current PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino is one of the frontrunners for the long-term position at the club, which was previously thought to be out of reach in the middle of a season.
However, according to the above-mentioned rumor, the PSG players feel that the arrival of a particular Zinedine Zidane is ‘imminent.’
The players are said to be well aware of what is going on at the club and, knowing that change is on the way, Zidane’s name is said to be ‘even being brought up in conversation.’
Pochettino will, of course, step down as manager of the Parisian giants as a result of this.
Pochettino is thought to be dissatisfied with his lack of control over the club’s transfer dealings and, with his family still residing in London, is open to returning to England.
With none other than Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly driving the effort to bring Pochettino to Old Trafford, it becomes increasingly probable that he will take up the position at some time.
Given the roster and resources he inherits at the Spanish giants, there are still some doubts about his genuine skills, but he may possibly be walking into an even better situation at PSG.
If the clubs get the go-ahead, it may all happen very quickly, but for now, this appears to be a tricky little triple swap in the middle of a season.
However, these are some of the world’s most powerful and wealthy clubs, so anything is conceivable.
